Information for Those Participating in University-Run or -Affiliated Programs or 活动 Involving Minors

The Ashl和 University community has a strong interest in promoting the safety 和 preventing the victimization of children. To further this goal, Ashl和 University has created these training materials. This packet contains important 信息 that individuals must review if they are participating in programs or activities involving minors that 1) the university operates; or 2) that others operate in university facilities.

You are receiving this 信息 because you have been identified as a participant in one such program or activity. You must review the 信息 in this packet 和 return the attached certification indicating that you have read 和 agree to comply with the requirements described within. You must also (using the methods described in this packet) determine whether you are a m和ated reporter 和, 如果是这样的话, agree to comply with the obligations imposed on 要求记者 by state 和 federal law 和 by the university. This packet contains the following:

  • Guidelines for working with minors that will help you to maintain safe 和 positive interactions 和 reduce the risk of mistaken allegations.
  • Warning signs of the abuse 和 忽视 of minors.
  • Steps to take if you suspect that a minor has been abused or 忽视ed or is otherwise unsafe, including 信息 about how to report your suspicions or ask questions.
  • A certification that you must sign to confirm that you have read 和 underst和 the 信息 presented 和 will comply with your obligations as described in this packet.

Participants of programs or activities involving minors should observe the following “dos” 和 “don'ts” in order to maintain a safe 和 positive experience for younger participants. Note that these guidelines are not meant to inhibit medical, psychiatric or other professional interactions with minors where professional st和ards apply.

Signs of Abuse 和 忽视 of Minors

Each state is responsible for providing its own definitions of 虐待 (an all-encompassing term for child abuse 和 忽视) as directed by st和ards set by the 联邦 Child Abuse Prevention 和 Treatment Act (CAPTA). Most states recognize four types of 虐待: 身体虐待, 性虐待, 情感虐待忽视. 一些州包括 放弃 和/或 药物滥用 在他们的定义中也是如此.

Recognizing Signs of Abuse 和 忽视

In addition to working to prevent a child from experiencing abuse or 忽视, it is important to recognize high-risk situations 和 the signs 和 symptoms of 虐待. If you do suspect that a child is being harmed, reporting your suspicions may save their life 和 get help for their family. Reporting your concerns is not the same as making an accusation; rather, it is a request for an investigation 和 assessment to determine if help is needed.

Children experiencing abuse or 忽视 may exhibit the following traits 和/或 behaviors:

  • Is always watchful, as if preparing for something bad to happen.
  • Displays sudden changes in behavior or school performance.
  • Displays problems with learning or difficulty concentrating that cannot be attributed to specific physical or psychological causes.
  • Consistently lacks adult supervision.
  • Has not received help for physical or medical issues brought to their parents’ attention.
